Systemic candidosis and concomitant aspergillosis and zygomycosis in two Amazon parakeets (<i>Amazona aestiva</i>)

<jats:p><jats:bold>Summary. </jats:bold> Systemic candidosis and concomitant aspergillosis and zygomycosis were diagnosed immunohistochemically in two Amazon parakeets (<jats:italic>Amazona aestiva</jats:italic>). In the bird with systemic candidosis, subacute necrotic lesions were present in the lung and the gastrointestinal tract, whereas chronic giant cell‐containing granulomas were located in the liver, heart, spleen and on the serosal lining of the small intestine. Although the lesions in the liver, heart and spleen most likely developed as a result of haematogenous spread, the granulomas on the serosal surface may have developed after a local transmural intestinal invasion. In the second bird, aspergillosis and zygomycosis were restricted to the lung, whereas some zygomycetes were found in the air sacs as well as in the heart and kidneys. In all organs the zygomycotic lesions were dominated by throm‐bosing vasculitis, supporting haematogenous dissemination.</jats:p><jats:p><jats:bold>Zusammenfassung. </jats:bold> An zwei Amazonas‐Sittichen (<jats:italic>Amazona aestiva</jats:italic>) wurden immunhistochemisch je eine systemische Candidose und eine Doppelmykose (Aspergillose+Zygomykose) diagnostiziert. Im Vogel mit systemischer Candidose wurden subakute nekrotische Läsionen in der Lunge und im Gastrointestinaltrakt wie auch Riesenzellgranulome in Leber, Herz, Milz und Dünndarm gefunden. Wéhrend die Läsionen in Leber, Herz und Milz wahrscheinlich hämatogen streuten, dürften sich die Dünndarmgranulome als Folge einer lokalen intestinalen transmuralen Invasion entwickelt haben. Im anderen Vogel war die Doppelmykose auf die Lunge beschränkt, während die Zygomyzeten allein, abgesehen von den Luftsäcken, auch Herz und Nieren befallen hatten. In allen Organen zeigte sich in den Zygomyzeten‐Läsionen prominente thrombosierende Vaskulitis, was für eine hämatogene Ausbreitung spricht</jats:p>
