Abstract Lewis acid mediated reactions of methylthio substituted silyl enolate or ketene silyl acetal to α-alkoxyaldehyde give syn diols. A novel stereocontrolled synthesis of α-nonsubstituted β,γ-dihydroxyketone and ester is described.
