説明

Abstract Field emission microscopy of single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) and multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs) was performed. A bulk bundle (diameter 0.01 – 0.1 mm and length 1 – 2 mm) of SWNTs and MWNTs, which were obtained after purification processes of carbon soot containing respective nanotubes, was used as an electron emitter. For SWNTs, field emission (FE) originating from individual micro-bundles (with diameter 10 – 20 nm) was observed. Each micro-bundle gave only a bright spot without fine structure. For MWNTs, hollow ring patterns were observed since the caps of purified MWNTs used in the present study were open. Current vs. voltage characteristics were also measured by using a probe hole device, and the Fowler–Nordheim plot yielded a straight line in low current regions for both SWNTs and MWNTs.
