<jats:title>SUMMARY</jats:title> <jats:p> Total colony counts and analyses of the bacterial flora of the skin slime of cod, carried out at 5‐day intervals during the stowage of the fish in ice, showed that organisms of the genera <jats:italic>Pseudomonas</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Achromobacter</jats:italic> became predominant in the later stages of spoilage. </jats:p>
