Abstract The dynamical perturbations on the ionizations in middle altitudes at night were studied by solving the time-dependent continuity equation involving the charge transport effects. The propagating (2.4) mode of the solar semi-diurnal atmospheric tide is found to be the dominant cause of the intermediate layers at night. The vertical drift of the ionizations by the S q electric field seems to modify also the altitude variation of the intermediate layer during the course of night.
