<jats:title>ABSTRACT</jats:title> <jats:p> Three groups of previously unknown gram-positive, anaerobic, coccus-shaped bacteria were characterized using phenotypic and molecular taxonomic methods. Phenotypic and genotypic data demonstrate that these organisms are distinct, and each group represents a previously unknown subline within <jats:italic>Clostridium</jats:italic> cluster XIII. Two groups are most closely related to <jats:italic>Peptoniphilus harei</jats:italic> in the genus <jats:italic>Peptoniphilus</jats:italic> , and the other group is most closely related to <jats:italic>Anaerococcus lactolyticus</jats:italic> in the genus <jats:italic>Anaerococcus</jats:italic> . Based on the findings, three novel species, <jats:italic>Peptoniphilus gorbachii</jats:italic> sp. nov., <jats:italic>Peptoniphilus olsenii</jats:italic> sp. nov., and <jats:italic>Anaerococcus murdochii</jats:italic> sp. nov., are proposed. The type strains of <jats:italic>Peptoniphilus gorbachii</jats:italic> sp. nov., <jats:italic>Peptoniphilus olsenii</jats:italic> sp. nov., and <jats:italic>Anaerococcus murdochii</jats:italic> sp. nov. are WAL 10418 <jats:sup>T</jats:sup> (= CCUG 53341 <jats:sup>T</jats:sup> = ATCC BAA-1383 <jats:sup>T</jats:sup> ), WAL 12922 <jats:sup>T</jats:sup> (= CCUG 53342 <jats:sup>T</jats:sup> = ATCC BAA-1384 <jats:sup>T</jats:sup> ), and WAL 17230 <jats:sup>T</jats:sup> (= CCUG 53340 <jats:sup>T</jats:sup> = ATCC BAA-1385 <jats:sup>T</jats:sup> ), respectively. </jats:p>
