Unstable oscillation of tubular cantilevers conveying fluid II. Experiments
Description
The experiments described here were designed to check various aspects of the theory presented in part I. Experiments were conducted mainly with rubber tubes conveying water or air and with metal tubes conveying oil; some experiments were also conducted with a tube fitted with various nozzles at the free end. The theory of part I is extended to take account of internal damping in the tube material and to obtain an indication of the effect of viscous damping forces associated with the surrounding fluid. It is shown that damping may de-stabilize the system. Agreement between experimental observation and theoretical predictions is shown to be satisfactory.
