<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Investigation of the Raman spectra of the molten MgCl<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>‐KCl system by the use of factor analysis indicates that the melt is a two‐component system involving equilibrium between MgCl<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="graphic/tex2gif-stack-3.gif" xlink:title="urn:x-wiley:03770486:media:JRS1250261002:tex2gif-stack-3" /> and Mg<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>Cl<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="graphic/tex2gif-stack-4.gif" xlink:title="urn:x-wiley:03770486:media:JRS1250261002:tex2gif-stack-4" />. The pure Raman spectra corresponding to these two species are recovered from the broad features via a self‐modeling method.</jats:p>
