<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The investigation was performed partly at the Laboratory for Physical Chemistry of the solid state.</jats:p><jats:p>To investigate the actual form of the copper catalysing the direct synthesis of methylchlorosilanes, intermetallic compounds of silicon and copper are used as contact masses. Apparently copper must be present as an intermetallic compound with silicon in order to yield selectively dimethyldichlorosilane.</jats:p><jats:p>It appears that the selectivity of the direct synthesis can be maintained as long as free silicon is available to fill up the silicon sites in the intermetallic compound, which are emptied due to the reaction with methyl chloride.</jats:p>
