Prevalence of Virulence Genes and Cytolethal Distending Toxin Production in<i>Campylobacter jejuni</i>Isolates from Diarrheal Patients in Bangladesh

<jats:title>ABSTRACT</jats:title><jats:p>From 300 stool samples, 58<jats:italic>Campylobacter</jats:italic>strains were isolated by standard microbiological and biochemical methods. Of these, 40 strains were identified as<jats:italic>Campylobacter jejuni</jats:italic>and 5 as<jats:italic>Campylobacter coli</jats:italic>. The presence of<jats:italic>flaA</jats:italic>(100%),<jats:italic>cadF</jats:italic>(100%),<jats:italic>racR</jats:italic>(100%),<jats:italic>dnaJ</jats:italic>(100%),<jats:italic>pldA</jats:italic>(100%),<jats:italic>ciaB</jats:italic>(95%),<jats:italic>virB11</jats:italic>(0%),<jats:italic>ceuE</jats:italic>(82.5%),<jats:italic>cdtA</jats:italic>(97.5%),<jats:italic>cdtB</jats:italic>(97.5%),<jats:italic>cdtC</jats:italic>(97.5%), and<jats:italic>wlaN</jats:italic>(7.5%) genes was detected in<jats:italic>C. jejuni</jats:italic>by PCR. All<jats:italic>C. jejuni</jats:italic>strains but one produced cytolethal distending toxin in a HeLa cell assay.</jats:p>
