The concentration method was examined for determination of fluoride and chloride ions at low concentration by the suppressed ion chromatograpy with a concentrator column. The usage of conventional method for analyzing ultra low concentration samples such as pure water resulted in lower recovery of fluoride when the sample contained sulfate ion more than 1% of the ion exchange capacity of the concentrator column (Dionex AG1, 4 mm i.d. × 50 mm). The recovery of chloride ion was reduced when sulfate ion was injected more than 10% of the anion exchange capacity. The lowering of the recovery was due to the fact that fluoride and chloride ions show lower affinity for the anion exchange resin, compared with the eluant anion (carbonate). Fluoride and chloride ions were eluted by carbonate ion which was dessosiated from the anion eachange resin in the concentrator column by the ion exchange of sulfate in the sample solution. Retain of fluoride and chloride ions in the sample containing sulfate ion increased by using of the concentrator column which had been regenerated with low affinity anion, hydroxide (6 ml of 0.1 M NaOH). When the concentrator column was back-flashed after sample concentration, a large amount of hydroxide ion was eluted into the separator column (Dionex AS1, 4 mm i.d. × 250 mm) and converted to H2O through the suppressor. The negative peak caused by hydroxide occupied a position between the fluoride and chloride peaks and did not interfere with the determination. In the proposed method the recovery of fluoride ion was 100% when the amount of sulfate ion was less than 10% of the ion exchange capacity of the concentrator. The recovery of chloride ion was 100% when sulfate ion was less than 1/3 of the capacity.
