Description

Sulfur in cosmetic products was successfully determined as sulfate ion by ion chromatography after oxidazation with hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline medium. One g of sample was taken into a 300ml beaker and dissolved in 30ml of pottasium hydroxideethanol solution on steam bath. After oxidizing with 50 ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, 10ml ofphosphate solution (6mg/ml), internal standard, was added. The sample solution was diluted to ca. 300ml with water, and 15pi aliquot of the sample solution was injected into chromatograph equipped with a anion analytical column (6mm i. d. ×25cm) and a conductivity monitor by using 3.0mM sodium carbonate solution as a mobile phase. Peak height ratio (sulfate/phosphate) was directly proportional to weight ratio (sulfate/phosphate). Recovery rate and coeffi cient of variation of sulfur for the known sample was 98.9% and 1.70%, respectively. By using this method, sulfur in several commercial cosmetic products was accurately determined without any intereferences.
