Gaseous nitric acid and particulate nitrate in the atmosphere are determined with the denuder difference experiment (DDE). This is relatively simple method and requires two parallel samplers with a polyamide filter respectively. One of the samplers is used to determine both gaseous nitric acid and particulate nitrate, whereas the other, preceded by a diffusion denuder to remove gaseous nitric acid, to determine particulate nitrate. Gaseous nitric acid is determined as the difference of the amounts collected by the two samplers. The diffusion denuder consists of 10 nylon tubes (4.2 mm i.d., 50 cm length) and two pyrex glass adaptors. The tubes are placed in a parallel configuration between the two adaptors. Polyamide filter is capable of collecting gaseous nitric acid and particulate nitrate simultaneously. The filter deposit is analyzed for nitrate ion with ion chromatography. The collection efficiency of the diffusion denuder for gaseous nitric acid is about 99 % at sampling flow rate 10 1/min. Penetration efficiency is over 95 % both for model particulate nitrate (NaNO3, ca. 0.1 μm dia.) and for ambient particulate nitrate. For determination of 1 ppb gaseous nitric acid, sampling period of two hours is required.
