Description

Suitable conditions for oxidation of formaldehyde by hydrogen peroxide have been investigated in alkaline solutions. At an ambient temperature 8 l of 3.7 % formaldehyde was taken in a 20 l-reaction vessel and mixed with 10 l of 1 M sodium hydroxide, followed by gradual addition of 0.6 l of 30% hydrogen peroxide at a rate of 15 ml min-1under vigorous stirring. The temperature of the solution rose to around 50°C, and the reaction was completed within 60 min, resulting in quantitative formation of formate. These conditions and procedures were recommended as a convenient method for oxidative disposal of formalin waste.
