Accuracy of concentration of commercially available metal standard solutions.

Abstract
In order to check the reliability of commercially available 1000 μg/ml metal standard solutions, the concentrations given on the labels of copper, lead or cadmium solutions from nine manufacturers were compared with those measured by high precision photometric titration using a computer-controlled automatic titrator. Prior to the measurements, primary standard solutions of these metals and a zinc basic standard solution were prepared by dissolving pure metals with dilute nitric acid. Determination of the concentrations of the primary standard solutions was performed by chelatometric titration using 0.05 and/or 0.1 mol/l EDTA standard solutions of which factors were obtained on the basis of the calculated concentration of the basic standard solution. In the same manner, the concentra tions of the commercial solutions were determined on the basis of the measured concentrations of the primary standard solutions. The indicated values of some commercial solutions showed deviations of 12.6%, from the measured values. Thus it is recommended to establish an inspection system for commercial standard solutions under the regulations of the Japanese Industrial Standard for metal standard solutions.
