Japex Oman Ltd. has conducted exploration and development activities in the onshore Block 5 of the Sultanate of Oman since 1981. The Daleel field was discovered in 1986 through the exploratory works. The delineation wells successfully disclosed the essential information to assess the reservoir and encouraged us to take further steps towards its development. Commercial discovery of the field was declared in 1989 followed by the field development activities. The field was estimated to be marginal in its reserves, it was therefore decided to start production by means of EDF (early development facility), in an attempt to recover the exploration cost as early as possible. In the meantime, the permanent production facilities were constructed, and the production was diverted from the EDF to them in 1991. Phased development strategy was taken to minimize the initial investment and to break up the cost. Following this strategy, a series of drilling campaigns have been carried out around every two years. EMA (emulsified matrix acidizing) was carried out on all the vertical wells to improve the productivity. In addition, horizontal drilling has been introduced since 1994 to increase it. With our continuous endeavors, the field economics was improved by the efficient utilization of the facilities and optimal application of horizontal wells.
