Abstract
Printing blankets and rubber rolls have been modified due to the changes in both the press and the materials used in it such as paper, ink, and wash material. The compressible layer in the blanket is improved for quick recovery from repetitive compression for high-speed presses. In "thermasphire technology, " a dry rubber sheet laminated on a base fabric is used as the compressible layer. This new technology gives stable quality and less gage loss. The latest technology uses a metal-backed blanket for 4 × 1 presses. The rubber roll has lighter weight because of the use of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) core. Also the rubber roll has been improved to less diameter shrinking and less heat build-up due to a special rubber compound. The use of oscillating rubber rolls reduces the rubber damage from the plate edge.
