Description

It has been reported that some Diazonium salts make PVA insoluble in water with irradiation of ultraviolet rays.
We found that Tetrazonium salts had the stronger light hardening effects to PVA than Diazonium salts and studied on Infrared absorption spectra of PVA-Tetrazonium salts films before and after exposure to ultraviolet rays.
After exposure, new absorptions appeared at several bands which were considered to be asymmetric νas(=C-O-C) and symmetric νs(=C-O-C) respectively in Infrared spectra.
Consequently it was concluded that the light hardening effects of Tetrazonium salts to PVA was accomplished by such mechanism that Tetrazonium salts reacted with hydroxy groups of PVA and crosslinked linear PVA by the bonds of phenyl ether type to form the network structure.
