Ever since the launch of CIP4/JDF at DRUPA 2000, the concept finally seems to be coming into reality. Although an “industry standard” seemed impractical, with the help of CIP4 members and printing companies who realize need for comprehensive system integration in the graphical arts industry, the concept is currently in the stages of conducting test operations. The end-to-end job ticket specification which was known as a black-box can be now formatted in a standardized way with data being passed along between different applications and systems, vendors and devices. By having MIS (Management Information System) as an internal digital hub, data can be interactively communicated and deal with real-time orders, corrections, changes, and job tracking. This article will explain about the JDF technology, the history of how it has come about and the current challenges which it holds.
