Ethyl icosapentaenoic acid (EPA-Et) was concentrated from fish oil with Supercritical CO2 using a rectification column in 9.7 mm internal diameter and 1100 mm effective height. To improve supercritical fluid-liquid contact, “Tawashi” rotor was placed in the extraction cell and the column was packed with Dixon Packing. For greater separation capacity, the column temperature gradient from bottom to top was 35 to 80°C. As the result, reflux flow, waterfall-like in appearance, could be seen, and EPA attained a maximum 90%, although C20 : 4 components were abundantly present in the experimental feedstock. It is thus evident from the present study that EPA can be separated from C20 : 4 components by Supercritical CO2 extraction using rectification column optimized with supercritical CO2-Liquid contact and minimal backmixing.
