Five glycosides were isolated from the leaves of Celosia argentea L. and their structures were determined based on UV, MS, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopic data as 1- (4-O-β-glucopyranosyl-3-methoxyphenyl) propane-2-ene (citrusin C, 1), 3-O-β-glucopyranosyl-1H-indole (indican, 2), (3Z) -hexenyl-1-O- (6-O-α-rhamnopyranosyl-β-glucopyranoside) (3), (3Z) -hexenyl-1-O-β-glucopyranoside (4), and (7E) -6, 9-dihydromegastigma-7-ene-3-one-9-O-β-glucopyranoside (5). On bioassay on the germination of lettuce, compound 1, aglycone of 1 (1a), and aglycone of 3 (3a) exhibited growth inhibitory activity, whereas compounds 2 and 3 exhibited growth promotive activity. The presence of compounds 1-5 in the leaves of Celosia argentea L. is reported here for the first time.
