In engineering critical assessment by strain criterion, the deformation behavior in the vicinity of a notch tip beyond general yielding should be clearified. In the present paper, attention is forcussed to the analytical and experimental studies on the crack opening displacement at the initial tip of notch as fracture controlling parameter under engineering sence. Investigation has been carried out on the relationships between crack opening displacement, δ, and overall strain, e, in notched wide plate, using path independent J- or I-integral.<BR>The deformation process of notched plate can be divided into three parts, or small scale yielding, full yielding and general yielding. Beyond general yielding in which gross area has been in yield, the relation of COD, δ, vs. overall strain, e, in a plate including a through-thickness notch is given as δ= (2πc) 1/1+ne (2c : notch length, n : strain hardening exponent of material used) by analysis using J-integral. However, in experiments of the notched plate made by structural steel in the range of which overall strain is less than about 0.05, it can be considered that δ=2πce. In the full yielding region in which only net area is in general yielding, the δ-e curve depends upon the gauge length, that is, δ-value is only proportional to the displacement. And it is clearified using path independent integral I that the COD-value is also proportional to the overall strain e in the infinite body including a penny-shaped notch.
