Description
The behavior of a bubble of gas suddenly injected from a nozzle into a liquid between horizontal circular disks is studied experimentally and analytically.<BR>If the ratio of the distance between the disks to the nozzle diameter is less than or equal to 2, the measured front velocity of the interface agrees well with the analytical one. If the ratio is greater than or equal to 4, at first the front velocity is nearly equal to that of a single-phase radial wall jet of gas. Thereafter it is governed by the gravity current. And the empirical formulae of the tip velocity are proposed. At low gas flow rates, the height of the gas-filled portion depends on the limiting height of bubble, which can be expressed by liquid properties alone. By comparison of the measured bubble height with the analytical one, a correlation for the bubble height is proposed.
