Abstract

In this research, initially, an in-situ test to know whether the cable sensor could be used for the rock fall detection and could be used for road management was carried out and interesting data was obtained. Here, the steel wire cable sensor (SWCS) whose mass is large was used. In the emergency use, for example, for the rock fall monitoring just under the recovery works after a big rock failure, development of a new type cable sensor whose mass is not so large was expected. Because of this reason, 2 kinds of Texture Reinforced Cable Sensors (TRCS-I and TRCS-II) have been newly developed for emergency use. From this research, following points were clarified. 1) By using SWCS, output waveform of output voltage whose peak value exceeded 1,500 mV was registered when a rock fall occurred from the height about 110 m above sea level. This data could be used for the emergency closing and reopening of a National Route practically. 2) Values of output voltage of TRCS-I and TRCS-II generated by a steel pipe collision had an increasing trend when the tensile strain was given from 0 to 2 %. The values of output voltages were almost constant when the tensile strain from 2 to 9 % was applied. Then the value decreased gradually with the increase of tensile strain larger than 9 %. Two kinds of Texture Reinforced Cable Sensors are considered to be useful for the emergency use for rock fall monitoring.
