Description

In the manufacture of inks and paints the pigments used are typically in an aggregated state and must be dispersed in a solvent. The dispersion of aggregated pigments to near to the primary particle size enables pigment characteristics to be exerted. The pigment performance varies greatly depending on factors such as particle size, type of crystal, particle shape and particle size distribution of the pigment. Physical properties of paints, such as transparency, gloss and tinting strength are influenced by the pigment particle size. Therefore, in the manufacture of inks and paints, the process of dispersing the pigment is critical.
Various types of dispersing machines with different characteristics have been developed. The use of the appropriate machine for the intended purpose under optimized conditions is critical. A bead mill is an effective dispersion apparatus for the production of fine particles. In addition, dispersion efficiency in a bead mill is improved by employing a mild dispersion process developed to optimize the motion of ideal beads to disperse pigment aggregates.
In this report the characteristics of bead mills, the techniques for dispersion with bead mills, and a method for highly efficient dispersion using bead mills are explained.
