Abstract

Silsesquioxane placed between silicone and silica has both organic and inorganic features. In this research, the heat resistance of cured “SQ series”, the silsesquioxane derivative into which an organic crosslinking group is introduced, was evaluated. Specially devised molecular design of SQ series gives excellent resistance to thermal shock and yellowing. Utilizing these findings, we developed an excellent atomic oxygen protective coating agent for spacecraft that overcomes the defects of existing coatings. Its performance was demonstrated in actual space by SQ series coated materials equipped to spacecraft.
