Description
Many open source software products have been created and distributed by Japanese academic and research institutions. Largely due to the lack of sustaining funding and activity beyond initial proof-of-concept and deployment work, there are few products which succeeded in gaining an active user community. This is likely because, when compared with foreign countries, there are few open source activities and events in Japan and understanding of the inherent benefits of open source software is limited. This article discusses the value that open source software brings to the academic future, both in today's deployment and in tomorrow's leadership opportunities. Author's experiences were drawn to give an insider's story of developing repository software named WEKO, as well as the experiences participating in some global open source communities.
