Abstract
There are two kinds of dephasing (phase relaxation): statistical phase relaxation (SPR) and quantum-mechanical phase relaxation (QPR). SPR comes from statistical ensemble averaging. QPR comes from the trace over an environmental system. SPR represents a dynamic process of an ensemble but QPR represents one of an individual member of the ensemble. This classification makes the meaning of dephasing clear. A spectroscopic interpretation of dephasing is described.
