The core structure of an a⁄2[110](1\bar10) edge dislocation in sodium chrolide crystal was studied by computer simulation under a cyclic boundary condition. It is found that each dislocation is dissociated into two partials with Burgers vectors a⁄2[100] and a⁄2[010], forming a crack on the expanded side of the dislocation and that the average interatomic distance in the crystal increases by 5.5 per cent, when the crystal contains dislocations with a density of one dislocation per 30 atomic rows parallel to [001]. Using this value, we can explain the large expansion on melting of the salt on the basis of the dislocation theory of liquid. The energy of an edge dislocation per an interatomic distance is 1.19 eV for the above-mentioned dislocation density, which agrees with the observed value of the heat of fusion.
