A very large nonlinear effect in the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations of tun has been observed using a torque magnetometer in magnetic fields up to 22 kG. This effect was explained by a torque snap effect (Vanderkooy-Datars effect) which occurred when the torque on a sample caused an appreciable twisting of the suspension rod.
