The polarization characteristics of the blue-copper luminescence in a cubic ZnS:Cu, I (Cl, Al or Ga) single crystal grown from the melt were investigated. The polarization with particular azimuthal dependences is observed under polarized characteristic excitation, indicating that the center has its own symmetry lower than that of the host lattice and is some kind of associated center. The results are discussed in terms of the model that the center is created by the association of a substitutional Cu+ ion with an interstitial Cu+ ion. From the comparison of the observed degrees and azimuthal dependences of polarization with those theoretically calculated, it is considered that σ dipole transition in the C3v symmetry center and || dipole transition in the Cs center account for most plausibly the observed results. Further one may conclude that the luminescence is due to the transition of the intra-center type taking place between two localized levels.
