Abstract

The weak ferromagnetism of Mn(HCOO)2·2H2O is studied by torque measurement below 3.7°K. The direction of the ferromagnetic moment is parallel to the c-axis above 1.7°K and to the b-axis below this temperature. The magnitude of the ferromagnetic moment in the low temperature phase (1.1×103emu/mole at 1.3°K) is considerably larger than that in the high temperature phase (1.9×102emu/mole at 2.0°K). It is pointed out that the difference can be explained by considering both of Dzyalcshinsky-Moriya and NiF2-type mechanisms.<BR>The effect of the external magnetic field on the phase change at 1.7°K is studied by observing transitions induced by the external field at temperatures near 1.7°K. The transition is detected by measuring dM⁄dH as a function of H. The angular dependence of the flopping field at 1.3°K and the temperature dependence of the flopping field can be explained by a conventional theory.
