Effects of Spin Waves on Spin-Allowed Optical Transitions

Abstract

A theory is developed on the effects of exciton-magnon interactions on the spin-allowed optical transitions in antiferromagnets and is applied to near infrared absorptions in FeF2. Intensities and polarization characteristics of the one- and two-magnon sidebands and the shift and broadening of the zero-magnon line are treated. Recent experimental results are discussed in the light of this theory. The effect of exciton-phonon interactions in FeF2 are also discussed qualitatively.
