Abstract

The Internet as an information resource has been widely recognized over the last few years. However it is not easy to discover high quality information on the Internet in a quick and effective way. Subjects gateways have been available for some years now, and they offer alternative to search engines such as Alta Vista and to web directories such as Yahoo. This paper will describe the role and features of subject gateways. It will outline the gateway initiative of TDL(Titech Digital Library) as a particular example, and will describe the resource discovery and evaluation process, metadata creating, and provision of search and browsing services. Finally it will point out the importance of co-operation and interoperability between gateways.
