Abstract

According to the federal structure of Germany, there is not only one, but several national centres for information, each specializing on one research subject. With financial support of the German Federal Government, four information centres for technology and natural sciences preparing and offering various data bases were established. On a national level, the German Fedral Government and the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" are engaged in formulating a policy for information services and initiating various projects concerning the development of an infrastructure for information as well as the implementation of projects in electronic data processing. Since many of the German information centres became part of an international scientific information system on an early stage, there was not much interest in participating in EU Telematics programmes initiated later. In regard to the citizens' life long education fostered by recent EU programmes, enhanced net-working and an opening to the public would be desirable.
