Distribution of Japanese scholarly monographs in digital format is still in the very early stages, in comparison with the English publishing world. Several commercial digitalization services have started in recent years. In 2010, which was called "the first e-book year" in Japan, the publishing community held various discussions and the new technology was introduced. When it comes to monographs, however, we have not found an effective business model. What is the problem? How can we make digitalization a success? Many researchers and research librarians hope to use e-books, but. However the launch of scholarly e-books in Japan still lies in the future. The major barrier remains the distribution system for publications.
