In recent years, since use of objective and quantitative measures to evaluate research performance has been of a great concern, bibliometric indicators have received considerable attention. However it should be noticed that there are some misunderstandings and misuses of bibliometrics and its indicators. This article presents the essential elements of bibliometrics and its application to the analysis of research systems. After showing the examples of typical bibliometric research, we introduce and discuss about the characteristics of bibliometric indicators, including citation impact, Impact Factor, and the current state-of-the-art performance indicators.
