PubMed and iyakuSearch are bibliographic databases covering medical and pharmaceutical literature, which have been offered free of charge on the web by database producers. PubMed and iyakuSearch contain the same data as the commercial online databases, MEDLINE and JAPICDOC. However PubMed and iyakuSearch have different retrieval mechanisms from MEDLINE and JAPICDOC. It is important to identify the difference between free databases and commercial online databases for users, especially information professionals. Members of Life the Science section in OUG, Japan Online Information Retrieval Users Group, examined PubMed and iyakuSearch to identify their unique features, as well as their advantage and disadvantages compared with MEDLINE and JAPICODOC, with the aim of exploring their appropriate and effective usage.
