Abstract

In June 1999, Sapporo Medical University Library has started to operate the first interlocking system between different databases in Japan. The system called "PIRKA", named after "pretty" in Ainu, which was modeled after NLM's "IAIMS" and was designed to provide centralized user service and enrich our regional medical treatment services. In July 2002, PIRKA migrated to the next system based on Ex Libris's library portal "MetaLib/SFX". As a result, PIRKA's regional medical treatment services expand throughout Hokkaido area and show importance of the improvement of service quality. This article describes brief overview of scholarly portal system "PIRKA" and how system librarians are involved to the development.
