Preprints to be published prior to conferences held by academic societies are a kind of literature that is particularly difficult to obtain, among various types of conference paper which are deemed as a kind of grey literature. Although such literature is not generally reviewed or screened in advance, they are often listed as references with the same frequency as that of the papers published in academic journals concerned. This paper introduces results/findings of questionnairs distributed to faculty members of universities of science and technology, which indicate that the faculty members of engineering in particular use such literature with the highest rate. The status quo of those materials/literature and data bases collected and processed by major information-related institutes and organizations in Japan are also discussed. Further, efforts are made to seek the possibility of establishing a proper distribution channel for (effective use of) preprints in Japan.
