The effect of detergent components on the colorf astness to laundering was investigated for the wool fabrics dyed with onion skin and mordanted with metal. Various JIS Standard Reference Detergents, commercial detergents, surface active agents, and sequestering agents were used. The washed fabrics showed significant change in hue, and the degree of color changes was affected by the combination of mordant and detergents. The sequestering agents had larger effect on the color changes compared to that of the surfactants. Ultraviolet/visible absorption spectra of various solutions of quesrcetin (the main colorant found in onion skin) containing mordant metal and/or detergent component were also measured. The solutions containing quercetin and metal showed absorption in the visible region due to the formation of quercetin-metal complex. The addition of a sequesteing agent to these solutions induced a remarkable decrease of the absorption. The results suggest that the color changes of the washed fabrics are partly attributed to sequestering mordant metal ions on the fabrics by sequestering agent.
