Description

Acute oral toxicity tests, in rats and mice, were carried out for 42 natural food additives used in Japan-24 food colors, 7 thickening agents, 5 flavouring agents, 4 food enzymes, 1 fruit glaze and 1 bitter ing agent. Deaths of animals were caused only by the administration of 4 additives, anis oil, pimenta oil, orange oil and wood vinegar. Liver injury was observed in rats treated with gardenia yellow, 7 days after administration. No harmful effects occurred in animals given the other natural food additives.
