Abstract

A questionnaire survey has been conducted of 109 female university students and their 107 mothers for the following two purposes:
1) A survey of the relationship between inside/outside sophistication and clothing/sophistication practices in order to discuss the validity of constructive concept indicated in the article, “Two Aspects of Sophistication Practices”by Hashimoto and Kashio, 2003.
2) A survey of the relationship between inside/outside sophistication and the mental health as well as the relationship between the sense of sophistication value in the elder age and the mental health.
Concerning the results of 1) and 2), a comparison has been made between students and their mothers. A comparative result has confirmed the constructive validity of these two aspects of sophistication. That is to say, younger females devote themselves to outside sophistication more than elder females do. On the contrary, elder females devote themselves to inside sophistication more than younger females do. In the younger generation, authors have found that outside sophistication is positively correlated with good self-mental health and inside sophistication is negatively correlated with bad others-mental health. By contrast, in the elder generation, only negative correlation has been found between inside sophistication and bad self-and others-mental health. In addition, younger females who devote themselves more to outside sophistication find more value in sophistication of elder age. Elder females who devote themselves more to inside sophistication find more value in sophistication of elder age.
