Description
<p>Consumer information on the internet concerning the usage of sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking powder) as a washing agent was researched and the related experiments were conducted. Most of the information tends to affirm the use of sodium hydrogen carbonate for laundry and maintained that the washing power is derived from the water softening effect of sodium hydrogen carbonate. We studied the effect of sodium hydrogen carbonate on the water hardness using ion chromatography and found that 30~60min was needed to utilize the water softening effect of sodium hydrogen carbonate. We conducted washing tests using 6 kinds of artificial soiled cloths and found that the washing power of sodium hydrogen carbonate is insufficient for heat-denatured protein soil,trigliceride soil,liquid paraffin soil, carbon black soil and iron oxide soil.When sodium hydrogen carbonate was added to soap solution, the washing power was decreased for heat-denatured protein soil, carbon black soil and iron oxide soil. The washing power of sodium hydrogen carbonate for fatty acid soil was higher than that of soap, but it was found that the ability was derived from the high concentration of sodium hydrogen carbonate. Despite very little aquatic toxicity, the life cycle inventory (LCI) analysis showed that the use of sodium hydrogen carbonate for home laundry was not ecological manner from the viewpoint of CO2 emission.</p>
