Abstract

In this paper, the spatial extent of shopping areas is estimated from Digital Yellow page database of 2000 and 2005 in Tokyo. Although monitoring of shopping areas relies on existing statistics data, they can't catch up with recent rapid changes of shopping areas because their frequency of update is not so high and spatial unit are not so small (e.g., city, town or city block unit). This study shows the method of determining spatial extent in shopping area by Kernel Density Estimation. This estimation is used in various fields. However there are not many studies which tried to use Kernel Density Estimation in commercial studies such as shopping areas. Then the method of deciding the parameters such as a band width and a density limit for shopping areas are also showed.
