Description

The present study deals with the parasitic forms of Sporothrix schenckii in scales and crusts of 13 patients with sporotrichosis.
Scales and crusts from the lesions were fixed in 10% formalin solution and the usual embedding techniques were employed. About 40 to 100 sections per material were cut at 5 and stained with periodic acid-Schiff stain.
At the same time, part of each material was cultured on Sabouraud Cycloheximide Chloramphenicol medium at room temperature and many colonies of Sporothrix schenckii appeared on all slants.
Microscopically, fungal elements were observed in most specimens of 13 patients. The yeast forms, observed in all cases, were round and oval, with budding or not, measuring 2 to 10μ. They existed sporadically or aggregatively. The filamentous elements, bearing conidia laterally or not, were found in 9 of 13 cases. The width of hyphae in scales was slenderer than that in crusts. Furthermore, perithecium-like organs were observed in specimens of a patient.
In conclusion, the fungal elements of Sporothrix schenckii could be demonstrated abundantly in sections of scales and crusts, nevertheless scarcely in specimens of biopsy materials taken from the same lesions.
