Abstract
In the Tanhualin historic district of Wuhan city, China, townscape improvement was implemented by the municipal government. In this study, we aimed to clarify both the commercial diversion that occurred after the townscape improvement ended and the details of the building renovation that accompanied it. Observation surveys were conducted and questionnaires were given to shop owners, which revealed that with the introduction of the creative industry, the number of stores owned by young people grew, and thus, the popularity of the district increased. However, many owners converted the buildings that were object of the townscape improvement into the shops. Furthermore, the signboard installations and wall colorings that reflect the stores' personalities affected the townscape. The concentration of distinct-looking stores contributed to the revitalization of the area, but negatively affected the historical environment.
