Description

Since 1980, art and culture have been used in many parts of the world as a way to boost revitalization of cities. The idea of creative city is one of these movements. This paper clarifies the background and the process of the cultural city policy of Kanazawa, which is one of the leading creative cities in Japan. Kanazawa was registered as a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art, and accordingly this paper especially focuses on the transition of craft in Japan. The major findings are as follows: Kanazawa's creative city policy is positioned as an extension of Kanazawa's cultural city policy; the transition of craft has an overlap with the transition of Kanazawa's cultural city policy.
