Abstract

A 78-year-old man visited our hospital complaining of dysphagia. A subsequent esophago-gram and endoscopy revealed two independent adjoined tumors in the middle thoracic esopha-gus : one was type 2 and the other 1 p. Standard subtotal esophagectomy with three-field lymph node dissection was performed under a clinical diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed that the type 2 tumor was identical to well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, while the type 1 p tumor was identical to a so-called carcinosarcoma, in which the carcinomatous component composed of poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, basaloid carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma. We report a rare case of synchronous multiple esophageal cancer exhibiting variable histological features : one set of features was consistent with that of squamous cell carcinoma and the other with that of so-called carcinosarcoma.
