Abstract

In this second paper on the maize plant, some supplementary descriptions were made regarding the course of the vascular bundles of the male inflorescence.
The axis of the male inflorescence is terminated by one or two spikelets which usually decay and shrink in the early stage of their development. The peripheral small bundles, found in the axis of the spikelet or in that of the male inflorescence, originate from the lower empty glume (untere Hullspelze) of each spikelet. When traced downwards, these small peripheral bundles, called the “outermost peripheral bundles” by the present writer, are arranged in a ring in each node and can be clearly distinguished from other bundles.
The medullary bundles, found in the top of the inflorescence, originate from the central bundles of the axis of the uppermost spikelet. Their vascular course is of the so-called palm type: the bundles extend through the stem downwards, migrating towards the periphery, and fuse with each other and with leaf trace bundles, but they do not, as a rule, fuse with the outermost peripheral bundles except at the base of the stem.
